Let’s have a quick look in to Sri Lanka’s Construction Sector

Construction industry is one of the largest sectors in the economy and continues to play an important role in the country’s economy. The industry has grown significantly, in its quest to make Sri Lanka a regional hub embarking complex development projects. Construction industry is operating in five major subsectors:
a) buildings,
b) roads and railways,
c) utility projects,
d) other civil engineering projects, electrical, plumbing and
e) other construction installation activities.

The CI covers nearly 100 trades under four major occupation groups: Crafts (39%), Professional & Managerial (34%), Unskilled (20%) and Operators and Mechanics (7%).

ICT has become an important sector in the global economy, creating wealth and prosperity around the world. In Sri Lanka, the ICT sector has shown its potential for contributing to the growth of the national economy both directly and indirectly through attracting investment, earning foreign exchange, creating employment, increasing productivity and promoting innovation. According to Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL); telecommunication, computer, and information services represent a key growth component within the service sector that generated US$ 995 million earnings in 2018.

Why is the industry important to Sri Lanka

a) The direct contribution of Travel & Tourism in GDP in 2017 was LKR 687.4 bn (5.3% of GDP). This is forecast to rise by 5.1% to LKR 722.1 bn in 2018.

b) This primarily reflects the economic activity generated by industries such as hotels, travel agents, airlines and other passenger transportation.

c) The direct contribution of Travel and Tourism to GDP is expected to grow by 5.7 pa to LKR 1,260.1 bn (5.7% of GDP) by 2028. (Ref WTTC Sri Lanka)

d) Also Tourism is the 3rd largest forex income earner for SL. If real value added is taken into account Tourism should be no 1.
